Grooming

Celtic Comb

People in ancient times didn’t always live in a state of filth and squalor. The Romans wrote that the Celts were quite particular about their personal grooming and bathing. They were also known for their elaborate hairstyles and fragrant scent of herbs and oils that they would use in their hair.

Women would have usually worn their hair long with either elaborate curls, knots or braids with gold balls and colourful beads fastened to the ends. They also put ribbons of thin flexible gold or silk in their hair. Men wore their hair long and lime washed into spikes for battles, which bleached their hair blonde. Combs were made from bone or horn with strips of metal to strengthen them.

Razors were in use as well as mirrors made from bronze. The men would have sometimes had a beard but most were clean shaven with a long moustache. The moustaches were sometimes worn curled up at the ends.

The Celts, both men and women, would have carried a pouch of personal items. These would usually include items for grooming such as combs, scissors and tweezers.
