The Celts wore great quantities of gold and other fine jewellery. Finger rings were worn as well as hoped earrings and bangles. A band of metal or cloth worn around the crown of the head called a fillet sometimes worn with a veil. High-ranking Celts, such as warriors, landowners and members of ruling class would have worn a gold or silver torc around their neck. These would have sometimes been engraved with patterns and words. The Celts were fond of glass, pearl and amber beads. They were made into many different shapes, sizes and colours by skilled craftsmen who took their time in creating perfectly shaped beads. They were used in making jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets and earrings, but often used in hair braids and fringes on clothing. Pins and broaches were used to close garments. The first pins were simple straight spikes that were pushed through the cloth and held there by friction. They were made of bone or antler, with some decoration around the head. When metals were discovered, bronze pins came into use. As the use of bronze spread, its qualities were exploited, and bent and sprung pins developed. |
